Brenda Huettner is an independent technical communication consultant who has worked for the past 30 years as a writer, editor, trainer, and manager, for both software and hardware companies. She’s a principal of Microwaves101.com, an online encyclopedia of microwave engineering knowledge.  Brenda is a Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication, and a Senior Member of IEEE, active in the Professional Communication Society, the Engineering Management council, and the Tucson section.  She’s also a member of the Usability Professionals Association.  Brenda has published several books and articles, and presented half-day, full-day, and multi-day courses on writing, project management, usability, and career management. She also participates in NASA’s volunteer Solar System and OSIRIS-ReX Ambassador programs.

Brenda Huettner is an independent technical communication consultant.  An active member of the professional community in the Tucson area, Brenda has worked as a technical writer, technical editor, trainer, usability consultant, content strategist, documentation department manager, Help author, graphic artist, and webmaster.  She’s written a wide variety of content for audiences of end-users, programmers, and engineers.  In addition to contract work through her own consulting company, P-N Designs, Inc., she maintains three Web sites and has several commercially published books in print. Brenda has also presented half-day, full-day, and multi-day courses on writing, project management, usability, career management, social media, and space exploration.

Brenda has been a member of STC since her first technical writing class in 1984.  Brenda was awarded the honors of Associate Fellow in 2003 and Fellow in 2005. She’s written articles for Tieline and Intercom, and has reviewed articles and written book reviews for Technical Communication.

Brenda is a long-time member and participant in several virtual communities.  She joined the Management SIG at its first meeting in 1994.  She’s currently a member of the Management SIG advisory council and on the Management SIG nominating and bylaws committees.  She was the SIG newsletter editor for 4 years, was the SIG progression moderator for 6 years, and has been on the program team or presented at annual conferences every year since 1994.  Brenda was awarded the Management SIG Distinguished SIG Service Award in 2002.

Brenda has been a member of the AccessAbility SIG since it’s inception as the Special Needs Committee in 2002.  Most recently, Brenda helped raise funds and publish the SIG’s popular accessibility guide for the 2005 and 2006 conferences.  She’s been a member of the Contracting and Consulting SIG since 1998, and the Usability SIG since 2002.

At the local level, has belonged to both large (Boston) and very small (Southern Arizona) geographic communities.  While in Boston, she spoke at program meetings and was a presenter at the first and at the tenth Interchange conference.  Currently, Brenda serves as Communication Director for the Southern Arizona community, overseeing the community outreach, web site, publicity, and newsletter committees.  She was president of the SAZ chapter in 2001-2002, when the chapter won Chapter of Distinction.  She’s also held numerous other positions.  Her biggest contributions to the local chapter include managing the Southwest Regional Publications, Art, and Online Competitions (2003 and 2005), and acting as the liaison to local chapters of other communication-related organizations. Brenda was awarded the Distinguished Chapter Service Award in 2002.

Brenda is also an active member of the IEEE Professional Communication Society, and was awarded the grade of Senior Member of IEEE in November 2006.  She also participates in the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society, the Engineering Management Society, and the local Tucson section, where she is currently serving as section Treasurer. She is a member of the Usability Professionals Association and the Interaction Design Association, has presented sessions at conferences including South by Southwest, WritersUA and Tekom, and has written articles for a variety of technical magazines.
